Celebrating Neurodiversity at St John: Embracing Inclusion for All

This Neurodiversity Celebration Week, we take a moment to recognise and appreciate the unique strengths and perspectives of people who think, learn, and process information differently.
The initiative was founded by Siena Castellon, in 2018, because she wanted to change the way learning differences are perceived. “I wanted to change the narrative and create a balanced view which focuses equally on our talents and strengths.” She says.
Neurodiversity includes conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and more, all of which bring valuable skills and creativity to our workplaces and communities.
At St John Ambulance Victoria, inclusion is at the heart of everything we do. As an organisation dedicated to helping and supporting people from all walks of life, it’s important that we also champion diversity within our own teams.
Supporting neurodiversity means creating an environment where everyone, regardless of how they think or process information, feels valued, respected, and empowered to succeed. "At St John, we believe that diversity in thinking makes us stronger. Neurodiversity Celebration Week is a chance to recognise and embrace the unique talents of neurodivergent individuals in our workplace and community. By fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and supported, we create a culture of innovation, understanding, and respect. Together, we can ensure St John is a place where everyone belongs." – Gordon Botwright, CEO, St John Ambulance Victoria
Why is Neurodiversity Celebration Week Important?
This global initiative aims to challenge stereotypes and raise awareness about the benefits of a neurodiverse workplace. Many neurodivergent individuals bring exceptional problem-solving skills, creativity, and attention to detail, making them valuable contributors to any team. However, they can also face barriers to employment, education, and social inclusion. By recognising and accommodating different ways of thinking, we create a more inclusive society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
How St John Supports Inclusion
At St John, we strive to build a workplace where all team members feel seen, heard, and supported. We foster a culture of understanding, and we are committed to making sure neurodivergent individuals can succeed in their roles. Inclusion isn’t just a value; it’s a strength that makes our organisation better.
This Neurodiversity Celebration Week, let’s take the time to learn, listen, and support one another. Small changes, like understanding different communication styles, offering patience, and celebrating individual strengths, can make a big difference.
Together, we can ensure St John is a place where everyone belongs.
