From Cadet to Community Leader: Liz’s Inspiring Journey with St John

For Liz Cannizzaro, volunteering with St John Ambulance Victoria has been more than just a way to give back, it’s been a lifelong journey of learning, leadership, and community connection.
Liz first joined St John as a teenager, starting out as a cadet in high school. “At the time, it was a way to stay connected with friends after I moved schools,” she says. “I also wanted to learn first aid and help out at some interesting events.”
After some time away, Liz returned as an adult volunteer while studying nursing. “I was looking for hands-on experience and thought volunteering might also help my grad year applications, and I got my first preference, so it must’ve helped!”
Rising Through the Ranks
Since rejoining, Liz has embraced leadership roles across many areas of the organisation. From Training Officer to Divisional Manager, she now serves as Regional Manager for the Metro area, where she supports teams across the region and helps shape the member experience.

“I’m drawn to roles that focus on training and supporting others,” Liz explains. “As Regional Manager, I see myself as the voice of the divisions and their members. I love being in a position where I can make decisions that have a real impact.”
For Liz, it’s clear that engagement is everything. “The more connected members feel to their division or region, the more they enjoy volunteering.”

Staying Grounded in Purpose
Of course, volunteering comes with its challenges. So how does Liz stay motivated? “Anytime I feel a lack of motivation, I bring it back to the ‘why.’ Why did I take on this role? Who am I helping?”
That clarity of purpose also fuels her pride in the work St John does in the community. “St John volunteers offer real, tangible support during moments of uncertainty or distress. Just our presence at an event can be reassuring.”
As a leader, one of her proudest moments is hearing from members who feel confident and supported on duty. “That’s when I know we’re doing something right.”
Recognising a Community Champion
Last month, Liz was nominated for the Kingston Citizen of the Year Award, recognising individuals who make a significant contribution to the local community.
“It’s a bit out of my comfort zone to be in the spotlight,” Liz admits. “But I see it as a great opportunity to highlight the amazing work of the organisations I’m part of, especially St John.”
Beyond her work with St John, Liz also volunteers with her local Life Saving Club and Scouts Group and recently completed a Community Leadership program with Kingston Council. “It’s been great to share experiences and learn from other community leaders.”
Looking to the Future
Liz is passionate about the role St John plays in supporting communities, and she encourages others to get involved too. “There are so many ways to volunteer with St John. Yes, there’s first aid at events, but there’s also Community Transport, Youth programs, even Communications. There’s something for everyone.”
“You don’t need to be an expert to make a difference. Just showing up, helping, and being part of something bigger can change lives, including your own.”
