From Colleague to Hero: How Raj’s Quick Thinking Saved a Life

In a time of crisis, knowing how to act quickly can make all the difference. Yet, despite the vital importance of defibrillators in saving lives, less than half of Victorians are familiar with how to use them. Fortunately, there are individuals like Nagaraj Nayak - fondly known as Raj - whose swift and decisive actions showcase the great impact of first aid training.

On the 11th of June this year, Raj found himself in a situation that tested his skills and composure. Early that morning, the company director desperately called for help, as his colleague, Ricardo Fuentes, had collapsed. Recognising the gravity of the situation, Raj immediately identified the signs of a potential cardiac arrest. “I realised on his face, totally purplish colour, so I started the DRABC procedure straight away.” Said Raj.

Without hesitation, Raj jumped into action. With the support of his fellow employees, he began performing CPR and quickly retrieved the defibrillator. His meticulous application of first aid techniques was critical in stabilising Ricardo until the ambulance team arrived on the scene.

Raj’s training with St John Ambulance Victoria proved invaluable. His calm attitude and quick response not only provided immediate care but also ensured that Ricardo received the essential medical attention he needed from the paramedics. The life-saving intervention was proof to the effectiveness of first aid training and the importance of being prepared for emergencies.

The gratitude expressed by Ricardo’s family was overwhelming. His wife, son, and colleagues all recognised Raj as a true hero. Their heartfelt appreciation emphasised the significant difference that well-executed first aid can make in critical situations.

In recognising Raj as one of our First Aid Champions 2024, we not only honour his quick thinking and bravery but also stress the ongoing need for comprehensive first aid training and the need for more Victorians to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to respond effectively in emergencies.

Raj's story is a powerful reminder of why it's crucial to spread awareness about first aid and defibrillator usage. Let it inspire others to gain the skills that could save lives and make a difference when it matters most.

Raj proudly accepted his First Aid Champion Awards trophy, delivered by St John Ambulance chair, Mark Engel.
