St John Youth Member Recognised as Young Citizen of the Year Finalist

On Australia Day, the Frankston City Council hosted a special event, combining their Citizenship Ceremony with their Annual Awards Ceremony, a day dedicated to celebrating outstanding contributions within the community. This year, one of St John Ambulance Victoria’s very own youth members, Jessica Underwood, stood out as a finalist for the prestigious Young Citizen of the Year Award.

Jessica’s nomination was a testimony to her commitment and passion for service. Over the past three years, she has devoted more than 800 hours volunteering as a first responder at events, ensuring the safety and well-being of countless Victorians. Her dedication has also seen her earn the Grand Prior’s Award, late last November, at Government House, along with the Bronze and Silver Southern Cross Awards, and she is currently working towards the esteemed Gold Southern Cross Award.

Beyond her impressive achievements, Jess is a role model and leader within the Frankston Youth Division. Each week, she works tirelessly as a senior leader, mentoring and inspiring younger members by teaching essential first aid skills and fostering a strong community spirit. Her dedication does not go unnoticed, and being named a finalist for this award highlights the incredible impact young people can have in their communities.

As part of her finalist experience, Jess was given the rare opportunity to sit down for coffee with Frankston City Mayor Kris Bolam and State MP for Frankston Paul Edbrooke, a meeting she eagerly anticipates as a chance to discuss youth engagement and the importance of first aid training.

While Jess may not have taken home the award, being recognised as a finalist is a remarkable achievement. It showcases the dedication, leadership, and impact that St John Youth members bring to the community every day.

The St John Youth Team extends their congratulations to Jess and all youth members for their incredible efforts in 2024. Their passion and commitment continue to shape a safer and more resilient community.
