Summer Safety Tips: Protecting Yourself and Loved Ones

Summer Safe Tips

As summer sweeps across Victoria, it's essential to be aware of the potential risks that come with the warmer weather. From the dangers of heat-related illnesses to the increasing rates of drowning incidents, it’s important to stay informed and prepared. St John Ambulance Victoria offers crucial tips to keep you and your loved ones safe this season.

Drowning Prevention: A Growing Concern in Victoria

Every year, Victoria witnesses an uptick in drowning-related incidents during the summer months. According to the latest statistics from Royal Life Saving Society Australia, there were 53 drowning deaths across the state in 2023 alone, a concerning 9% increase compared to the previous year. Most of these deaths occurred in coastal waters (41%), while the remainder were in rivers, lakes, and swimming pools.

On the bright side, drowning in young children (0-4 years) has reduced by 25% below the 10-year average. This is due to legislative changes such as pool redesign, and pool fencing.

Most drowning incidents are preventable, and the key to staying safe is awareness and preparation. Here are some essential drowning prevention tips:

  1. Always Supervise: Never leave children or inexperienced swimmers unattended near water, even for a moment.
  2. Know Your Limits: Only swim in designated areas with lifeguards and avoid swimming alone or in unfamiliar waters.
  3. Wear Life Jackets: When boating or participating in water activities, always wear a life jacket, particularly if you're not a strong swimmer.
  4. Stay Sober Around Water: Alcohol impairs judgment and reaction time, increasing the risk of accidents in and around water.
  5. Learn CPR: Knowing CPR can save a life in the critical moments before emergency responders arrive. Heat-Related Illnesses: Preventing Heatstroke and Dehydration

Victoria’s summers often see record-breaking temperatures, which can lead to heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heatstroke. In 2023, more than 50% of Victorians reported experiencing extreme heat conditions that led to mild dehydration or heat stress.

It’s essential to recognise the symptoms of heat-related illness and take proactive measures to prevent them:

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, especially during outdoor activities. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, as they can contribute to dehydration.
  2. Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing, and always wear a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from direct sun exposure.
  3. Take Breaks in the Shade: If you’re spending time outdoors, take regular breaks in cool, shaded areas to give your body a chance to recover.
  4. Know the Signs of Heatstroke: Symptoms of heatstroke include confusion, dizziness, nausea, and hot, dry skin. If you suspect someone has heatstroke, move them to a cooler place, hydrate them with water, and seek immediate medical attention.
  5. Check on Vulnerable People: The elderly, children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions are particularly vulnerable during extreme heat. Ensure they have access to air conditioning, hydration, and check in on them regularly.

Other Key Summer Safety Tips

  • Sun Protection: Always wear sunscreen with a high SPF, reapply regularly, and avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours (10 am – 4 pm).
  • First Aid Kit: Ensure your home and vehicle are stocked with a basic first aid kit, including burn cream, bandages, antiseptic wipes, and any necessary medications.
  • Be Prepared for Bushfires: During summer, Victoria’s bushfire season also poses significant risks. Familiarise yourself with the local bushfire plans, ensure your property is fire-safe, and follow all warnings issued by emergency services.
